Last time we checked in with Rory and Jess from Gilmore Girls at the end of season 3, they were no longer together as a couple. Jess had left town and was in California with his dad. Rory had just graduated high school and was planning a backpacking trip through Europe with Lorelai.
Did you really think Jess was gone for good though? Spoiler alert- he’s not. Here are the most important Rory and Jess episodes from season 4 of Gilmore Girls.

"A Family Matter"
(Season 4, Episode 12)
We don’t see Jess again until about halfway through season 4 when he returns to Stars Hollow to pick up his car. Liz, his mother, is also in town with her new boyfriend TJ. After an argument with Luke, Jess sleeps in his car outside the diner. This is where Rory sees him, and realizes he’s back in town- surprise!
"Nag Hammadi Is Where They Found the Gnostic Gospels"
(Season 4, Episode 13)
Even though he’s trying to avoid her, Jess runs into Rory over and over again while waiting for Gypsy to fix his car. Eventually, the two have it out and Jess tells Rory that he still loves her. Then what does he do? He leaves town again.
"Luke Can See Her Face"
(Season 4, Episode 20)
Jess is back in town again, this time for Liz and TJ’s wedding. He discovers Luke’s self-help book and tape. After listening to/reading them, he realizes that he didn’t treat Rory right and decides he wants to get back together with her.
"Last Week Fights, This Week Tights"
(Season 4, Episode 21)
Jess goes to find Rory at her Yale dorm, where he runs into Rory and… Dean. If you thought this love triangle was done, think again! Rory asks Dean to leave so she can talk to Jess, which Dean does not like (just a reminder- Dean is a married man at this point).
Inside her dorm room, Jess asks Rory to go away with him, saying he’s ready to be with her now. Rory rejects him, presumably because she has feelings for Dean again.
And, now, Jess is gone again.
