Welcome to another installment in the Garden Diaries series, where I share the ups and downs of the growing season here in the Northwoods. As promised, today I’m sharing even more of our dahlias from this season- and there are a lot!

Fall is officially here and nights are getting chilly again. Summer felt so short this year. Despite the recent temperature drops, our dahlias are still blooming away- they are fall flowers after all. From gorgeous ball dahlias to big dinnerplate dahlias and everything in between, here are some (more) of my favorite blooms from this season.

Dahlias & Bees

Bumblebees love our dahlias, and most nights you can see them taking a nap in the center of the flowers. While I can’t stand wasps and hornets, these little pollinators are welcome guests. Plus, they’re pretty friendly- if you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you.

Although you can’t really tell, in the picture below there were actually two little bumblebees tucked in this pink dahlia.

All of these hot pink ball dahlias are called Chimacum Katie from Connell’s Dahlias, in case you were wondering. They are some of my favorites (and apparently the bees’ favorites too). These plants have produced a ton of blooms and the flowers last quite a long time in vases after being cut. Highly recommend!

Other Dahlia Varieties

The dahlia below is just as bright pink as Chimacum Katie, but this one is called Brian R from Connell’s Dahlias. You might sense a theme here, but this is another favorite of mine.

The dahlia above is called Bridezilla from Swan Island Dahlias. The plant just started blooming, and it looks like we’ll get a few more flowers.

The pink and white one below is called Hillcrest Jonathan from Connell’s Dahlias. These plants have been working overtime producing beautiful dual-colored blooms.

Here’s another Emory Paul dahlia from Swan Island Dahlias, which I featured in the last installment of the Garden Diaries series as well. This one is definitely a keeper!

Just look at all of these beautiful flowers- and this is only a small portion of the dahlias our plants produced so far this season. I can only imagine the size and quantity of blooms we would have gotten if the season had started off a bit warmer and less stormy. However, I certainly can’t complain about how things turned out!
