It may commonly be referred to as “Turkey Day”, but I think the side dishes are the true stars of Thanksgiving dinner (and I bet others will agree with me). That’s why I’m listing some of my and my family’s favorite classic Thanksgiving sides that have a permanent place on our holiday table.

While trying something new can be fun, holidays are also a great time for traditional comfort food. From mashed potatoes to roasted carrots, these are some of the best Thanksgiving dishes that I’ll be reaching for before even looking at the turkey. If you too are a classic side dish fan like myself, give these recipes a try!

The Best Classic Thanksgiving Side Dishes:

1
The Best Homemade Cranberry Sauce (Only 4 Ingredients)
Cranberry sauce is a holiday classic, and this recipe is sure to be a hit with everyone at your table (even the cranberry haters). Sugar adds some sweetness while orange zest, fruit, and juice add the perfect amount of bright citrusy flavor to complement the tart cranberries. Pair this cranberry sauce with your Thanksgiving or Christmas turkey, add it to sandwiches, spread it on toast, or eat it all by itself.

The Best Oven Roasted Carrots
These oven roasted carrots are the perfect simple side dish for your next holiday or weeknight meal (and are a personal favorite of mine). Honey, maple syrup, and a simple seasoning blend create a perfect balance of slightly sweet and rich savory flavor. Even if you're not a carrot person, you'll love these!

The Best Creamy Mashed Potatoes
The Best Creamy Mashed Potatoes
I LOVE mashed potatoes, and these extra rich and creamy ones are the best ever (in my completely unbiased opinion). Cream cheese, milk, and butter add extra richness and the potatoes are perfectly smooth thanks to the use of a ricer in place of a masher. Pair them with a pot roast, Thanksgiving turkey, pan of cabbage rolls, or whip them up whenever you're craving some really good comfort food.
