In case you somehow missed it, a huge solar storm this weekend caused the Northern Lights to be seen all over the US. It was pretty cloudy where I live most of the weekend, so I was worried that we wouldn’t be able to see much. But the sky cleared late Friday night into Saturday morning, and Mother Nature put on quite a show. Just look at these pictures…
All of these pictures were taken with my iPhone (you can read more about how I take night sky photos on my iPhone here). I used either a 3-second or 10-second exposure time for most of these photos, depending on how quickly the Northern Lights were moving at the time.
The lights’ colors show up so much more vibrantly on camera than what you can see with the the naked eye. Don’t get me wrong, these auroras were strong and could be seen dancing across the sky- the colors just weren’t as vibrant as they are in these pictures. It’s like a camera truly unlocks the magic of the Northern Lights.
What do you see in the image above? (I see an angel.)
Looking straight up into the auroras is such a cool experience. I swear there wasn’t one part of the sky that wasn’t covered by dancing lights from about 11pm all the way to the morning.
I have never seen these kinds of blue and purple colors before! These pictures were taken at about 4 am, and I am just in awe at how much the lights changed throughout the night.
