NOTE: This post contains spoilers for Season 11, Episode 10 of When Calls the Heart.
Hello, Hearties! Welcome to the recap for June 9th’s episode of When Calls the Heart, titled “What Goes Around”. Tonight, Allie took a trip to see her father in prison and there were some MAJOR developments in the mystery of who shot Lucas. Buckle up Hearties, this episode is jam-packed!
Before we start- if you didn’t watch it, I highly recommend catching up on last week’s episode here. I’d actually make sure you’re caught up on the past 3 or 4 episode recaps, which you can find on this page since some storylines are finally coming together in this episode.
Okay, now let’s recap!
Allie's Solo Trip
This episode opens with Elizabeth sitting on her front porch writing in her journal, while Nathan gives Little Jack a riding lesson on Pal the Pony. He and Bill are taking turns teaching the little guy how to ride, and Elizabeth notes how excited she is to watch Little Jack grow up and become who he’s meant to be.
“As for Nathan and me,” Elizabeth also writes, “Allie needs Nathan right now.” Given the events of last week’s episode, Elizabeth understands and knows that all she can do is be there for both of them.
Unbeknownst to Nathan and Elizabeth, Allie has planned a solo trip to see her birth father in Granville Prison. She tells Angela about her plan, including when her train leaves. Angela, bless her heart, urges Allie to tell Nathan about her trip. When Allie refuses, Angela hands her some extra cash to keep on hand just in case she needs to stay the night in a hotel.
At the schoolhouse, Nathan delivers a box of notebooks to Elizabeth. The two share a little moment when a window gets stuck before being interrupted (again) by the children who have arrived to help Elizabeth complete a book inventory. Allie arrives along with the other kids, but don’t think she’s canceling her travel plans!
When Allie leaves to pick up sandwiches for everyone from the cafe, she never returns to the schoolhouse. Instead, Nathan comes rushing in to tell Elizabeth that he received a call from Granville Prison about Allie trying to arrange a visit. However, Dylan (Allie’s birth father) does not want to see her. After a bit of prompting, Angela tells Nathan and Elizabeth about Allie’s plan and that her train is leaving at 12:40.
Elizabeth and Nathan rush to the train station but aren’t fast enough to catch Allie’s train. While waiting in the lobby for the next train, Elizabeth tries to comfort a very distressed Nathan. He’s questioning the way he handled the entire situation with Allie, but Elizabeth is right by his side to support him.
Allie, meanwhile, has made her way to Granville Prison. She tells a guard that she is there to visit her father, a prisoner. He makes a call to let them know that Allie Parks is there to see Dylan Parks, but of course, we already know that Dylan doesn’t want to see Allie.
After a few hours, Nathan and Elizabeth pull up to the prison and find a crying Allie sitting outside on a bench. Dylan wouldn’t see her and she’s devastated. After apologizing to Nathan and telling him that she should have listened to him, Allie asks if they can go home.
Back in Hope Valley, Elizabeth catches Rosemary up on Allie’s little road trip. “Thank goodness you were there,” Rosemary tells Elizabeth.
“I really care about Allie,” Elizabeth says, but Rosemary calls her out right away. “Elizabeth, that’s not what I meant and you know it. Nathan needs you just as much as Allie, perhaps even more.”
“I need him too,” Elizabeth replies.
“So the stars were right after all?” Rosemary asks with a little smile, and Elizabeth says she hopes so with a smile of her own.
Meanwhile, Nathan and Allie have a heart-to-heart at their home. Allie is upset that Dylan couldn’t even be bothered to meet her after she traveled all the way there to see him. Nathan says that’s his problem, not hers. “He’s a fool for throwing away his chance at being your dad because his loss is my gain,” Nathan tells her. He can’t imagine what his life would be like without her, and he will always be there for her.
Not Montague, So Who?
Near the start of tonight’s episode, Rosemary decides to stay home with Goldie for the day, which Lee thinks is wonderful… as long as it doesn’t have anything to do with Montague. Rosemary admits that she has been blaming herself for Montague being beaten within an inch of his life, even though she knows that printing the truth about his bid on the resort was the right thing to do. She still feels guilty.
There’s a knock at the door. Bill has shown up hoping to discuss Montague, but Rosemary says there’s no point. She feels that they’re back to square one since Montague had nothing to do with Lucas’ shooting. She’s considering giving up the whole investigation since they don’t have any idea who else it could have been.
As Bill tries to persuade her that he needs her brain power to help him solve this, Rosemary notes that there’s one more thing they know for sure- someone wanted them to think it was Montague who shot Lucas. That’s why they chose Clayton Pike to take the fall, because he had a tie to Montague that could be found out fairly easily. But who else had a real motive to shoot Lucas? That remains a mystery (for now).
The Last Bidder
There is only one remaining bid on the table for the resort in Hope Valley, and it belongs to Jeanette Aucoin. Outside the saloon, Henry approaches Lucas, who looks to be deep in thought. “I’m thinking about New Orleans,” Lucas admits. “When I first met Jeanette. She wasn’t just beautiful, she existed on a plane above everyone else. I wanted that too.”
“Everything comes at a price,” Henry replies. Lucas says he realized that too and got out, or so he thought. Jeanette is back in his life again and is currently on her way to Hope Valley. Lucas once again asks Henry if everything is on the level concerning her bid, and he confirms that it is as far as he can tell.
Jeanette enters Lucas’ office, and the two discuss the resort. Jeanette wonders if she should advise her investors to rescind their bid since she has heard about the attack on Montague. Lucas urges her not to be too hasty. “I’m all you’ve got left, aren’t I?” she asks Lucas, clearly already knowing the answer.
As Lucas and Jeanette exit his office, they run into Lee and Bill. Lucas tells Lee that Jeanette has presented a viable bid and Henry has done his due diligence concerning the bid. This entire topic is clearly stressing Lucas out, and he has another flashback to the night of the shooting as he enters his office. Still, he can’t tell who exactly shot him.
Lucas’ assurance about the legitimacy of Jeanette’s bid has not quelled all of Lee’s concerns about the resort. In a meeting with Co-Mayor Maisie Hickam, Lee tells her that he has concerns about transparency involving the resort and is worried that Lucas is not attracting high-quality bidders. Furthermore, it seems that the resort has led to violence. Maisie is delighted that Lee has come to see things from her perspective.
Later, Lee visits Lucas in his office to speak to him directly about his concerns about the resort. Lucas says that they cannot know that the attack on Montague had anything to do with the resort, but Lee finds it hard to believe that it didn’t. Lucas assures Lee that he is doing everything he can to keep this process clean, but Lee wonders if that’s even possible at this point.
Lee tells Lucas that he thinks it’s time to cut their losses and walk away from the resort. This angers Lucas, who says it’s about more than the resort- it’s about the town’s future, the territory’s future, and their children’s futures. “If you’re too small-minded to see that…” Lucas trails off.
Honestly, I give Lee credit for not losing his temper at the “small-minded” comment, which seemed a bit out-of-character for Lucas. Instead, Lee simply tells Lucas that he no longer has his and Maisie’s support for the resort since it has already led to violence. “Lucas, my friend, nothing good is going to come of this. I’m so sorry,” Lee tells him.
“If that’s all, I have a resort to get built,” Lucas curtly replies. Then, after Lee has left, he has another flashback to the night of the shooting. But, again, he cannot see the face of who shot him.
Lee and Maisie’s doubts about the resort are so severe that they publish a statement publicly withdrawing their support for the resort in The Valley Voice. When Lucas reads the headline in the saloon, you can immediately see his frustration.
Lucas' Shooter Revealed
Lucas storms off to his office. He slams the door, tears up the newspaper, and yanks off his jacket. This angry Lucas is very unlike the character we have all come to know and love. Amid this temper tantrum, Lucas has a more vivid flashback than ever before of the night of the shooting. In fact, he remembers exactly what happened…
“What are you doing here?” Lucas says in this flashback, as he does in all of his previous ones as well. However, this time we see that he is talking to Jeanette, who has emerged from her vehicle and is approaching Lucas.
“I came to congratulate you, Cherie,” says Jeanette. “Governor Bouchard has a nice ring to it.” Behind Jeanette stands a man in a top hat, the same hat we have seen on the mystery man in Lucas’ previous flashbacks and (seemingly) on the man who attacked Montague.
“Who’s your friend?” asks Lucas.
“This is Mr. Shaw. He has some business he’d like to discuss,” Jeanette replies as the man walks up to stand by her side.
“I’m sorry. This isn’t the place or the time,” says Lucas as he turns to leave. But Jeanette stops him.
“Lucas, I’m afraid Mr. Shaw insists,” she says, as Shaw pulls a gun and points it at her. Immediately, Lucas grabs the gun. The two men struggle until a shot rings out- obviously this was when Lucas was shot in the leg.
Okay, so that was the flashback- let’s take a short timeout for some context. In episode 7 (read the recap here), Casimir Shaw was mentioned briefly and his wanted poster was seen behind Nathan’s desk in the Mountie office. He is a well-known rum runner that the Mounties are trying to catch. I thought it was odd that they made a point to mention him by name, which is why I included it in the recap. Alas, Shaw has a much bigger role in the season than just being a random criminal in the area…
Back to tonight’s recap! In present time, Jeanette enters Lucas’ office, and he immediately confronts her with the fact that she was there when he was shot. Jeanette’s face drops and she admits that Casimir Shaw forced her to take him to Lucas. She’s sorry because she never wanted to involve Lucas, but when Shaw found out about her and Lucas’ “personal connection” he threatened to kill her if she didn’t help him. Shaw wanted to push Lucas into allowing him to run rum through the territory.
“Is he still after you?” Lucas asks, and Jeanette replies that the publicity around the shooting scared Shaw off. However, when Lucas announced the request for proposals for the resort, Shaw became interested in the resort as a way to launder money. So, Casimir Shaw is the one behind Jeanette’s bid and he had Montague beaten to eliminate his competition. Jeanette warns Lucas that he must cooperate with Shaw otherwise they’re both good as dead.
No More Resort
Edwin, Lee, Rosemary, Bill, and Nathan have been gathered in the saloon by Lucas for some sort of announcement. As Lucas approaches them, Lee decides that the best defense is a good offense. Before Lucas says one syllable, Lee reminds him that he gave him fair warning about the mayors’ statements that were published.
“You did, and I appreciate that Lee. You know it’s the times like these where you realize who your real friends are.” Lucas says, before apologizing to Rosemary for how he reacted to her article about Montague. He then tells everyone that he has canceled the resort- the project is dead. This is the Lucas we’re used to! Thank goodness he’s back!
Edwin thinks Lucas has lost his mind. Lee is relieved. Rosemary wants an exclusive for The Valley Voice. Bill and Nathan want to know why this decision is being made now. Lucas only tells them that certain information has come to light and that he will prepare a formal statement.
However, as the group starts to leave, Henry asks Nathan and Bill to stick around. Inside Lucas’ office, Lucas gives them the real story- Casimir Shaw was the one who shot him, and he’s been using Jeanette to try to get to him. He wanted to get his claws into the resort.
Immediately, Bill says that they can put Shaw behind bars now that they have Lucas as a witness. However, Lucas says it’s more complicated than that- Jeanette is still in danger. It’s also possible that Shaw will come after Lucas in Hope Valley, which is why he’s letting Nathan and Bill in on this entire thing. He needs protection.
Bye Jeanette!
At the very end of the episode, Lucas and Jeanette are driving in her vehicle when Lucas asks her to pull over on the edge of town. “This is where we say goodbye Jeanette,” he says to her before telling her that he has canceled the resort.
She warns Lucas not to mess with Shaw, but he tells her that he has protection. She, however, does not- so he is trying to protect her. Jeanette needs to disappear so Shaw can’t find her, otherwise Lucas will have to have her arrested as an accomplice for shooting him.
Jeanette says she was looking out for Lucas, like she always does, when she agreed to front the resort bid. Lucas says to consider them even and then exits the car. He walks back to Hope Valley as Jeanette drives away.
Other Goings-On
Even with all the drama, suspense, and long-awaited answers to questions in this episode, there’s still more to recap. Here are some more important details and plot points from this episode:
- Maisie invites herself, Mama Hickam, and all the rest of her and Mike’s sisters to an impromptu dinner so they can all meet Mei. Oh, and Mei has to cook all the food! Despite Mei’s menu-planning stress, the dinner is very successful. Mei and Mike even say “I love you” to each other for the first time.
- Lily and Faith try to enjoy their very last day together before Lily’s grandma, Dora Watson, arrives back in Hope Valley. However, when she does get back into town, Dora can see just how good Faith is for Lily. Given her health issues, Dora thinks it’s a good idea for Lily to stay with Faith, permanently. Lily is excited to live with Faith but still be able to see her grandma regularly, and Faith is thrilled to not have to say goodbye to Lily. Seems like a win-win!
- Near the end of the episode, Nathan asks Elizabeth to come over and have dinner with him and Allie. But maybe she could… just maybe… bring the actual dinner? To make things easier, Nathan and Allie head over to Elizabeth and Little Jack’s house where they all enjoy a meal together. Seems like a little glimpse into their future as a family!
What an episode!
To recap the recap- infamous rum runner Casimir Shaw was the one who shot Lucas, Jeanette was at the shooting, Shaw was behind the remaining bid on the resort, Lucas completely halted all plans for the resort, Jeanette (maybe) left town, Allie and Nathan are back on good terms, Mei met all of Mike’s family, and Lily will be staying with Faith- whew!
