I am well aware that it is still summer, but I have decided to fully commit to the whole “Aug-tober” thing because I am so ready for fall. Today we’re starting off fall decorating with some of my very favorite spooky season decorations- vintage Halloween pieces by Debra Schoch.
In case you aren’t aware, Debra Schoch is an artist from Michigan known for her creative, whimsical folk art pieces. More specifically, she is known for her papier mâché figurines, which you’ll see a few of in this post.
In 2004, Debra joined Bethany Lowe’s team of artists, broadening the audience for her art significantly. However, all of the pieces included in this post are from Debra’s pre-Bethany Lowe era. They’re all original, handcrafted, signed, and dated between 1998 and 2001 (except one piece without a date). Anyone familiar with Debra’s work knows this was a time when she was selling at small, local craft fairs- which is where my mom bought all of these pieces.
I hope you enjoy browsing the pictures of these pieces as much as I have enjoyed decorating with them throughout the years. Without further ado, let’s start with these ghosts that are dated 1999 and 2000, respectively. Aren’t they cute?
Then there’s this witch from 2001. While she may not be for everyone, I LOVE her. So unique.
And, yes, that is a sash draped across her shoulder. It says “Miss October”, which you can see a bit better in the photos below. She’s a beauty queen!
Debra named her business Hop Hop Jingle Boo as a nod to Easter, Christmas, and Halloween. Many of her pieces combine themes from multiple holidays, like the Santa holding a pumpkin and the spooky snowman basket below. They are dated 1998 and 1999, respectively.
Back in the day, Debra used to sell folksy pieces made of other mediums, like this soft, hand-sewn jack-o-lantern doll (below). She is one of my favorites!
This is the only piece without a date on it, but I know that it was bought around the same time as the others in this post (1998-2001).
That’s all for Debra Schoch’s Halloween pieces. They are so unique, and I love every single one of them. Holiday traditions are very special to me, and I look forward to decorating with Debra’s artwork every single year.

Lastly, to Debra if you ever happen to read this- thank you for sharing your creativity and talent through your art. Your pieces truly shaped my holidays growing up and I treasure them all so much today.
